I would echo that in the next 5-10 years we will lose a very large portion of our experienced professionals. The numbers in my company reflect the same. We could lose 70% of our SHE pros in 7 years. Universities are not able to attract quality students to SHE programs.

A Tuesday afternoon session at last week’s National Safety Congresss, very lightly attended, addressed a provocative topic:  “Society’s Expectations for a Company EHS Program.”

Our last blog (10/26) discussed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s claim that “companies are people, my friend.” What if he told the protestor he encountered at the Iowa State Fair “companies are actually like countries, my friend”?

I’m frankly tired of hearing the old Heinrich data from the 1930s that asserts, “88% of worker injuries are due to the worker’s unsafe act.” Firstly, it sends the “blame the worker” message that kills cultures.

Last August while trolling for votes at the Iowa State Farm, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney created a media stir when, egged on by an irate protestor, said, “Corporations are people, my friend.”

Behavior is motivated by the consequences it produces especially when that consequence happens right after the behavior with high certainty.

The Market is not holy. The author himself is stuck with antiquated thinking. What this author is suggesting is that you want to be the top seller of buggy whips and just hope the world likes your product and advertising without noticing that cars are coming soon.

If a new generation comes about every 20 years or so, we’ve now seen two generations at the controls of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or Versions 1.0 and 2.0. Version 3.0 has been on the market since 2008, when the third generation of OSHA hands took command of the agency.
